Zhang Jianchun, Director General of China's Hemp Research Centre in Beijing has a dream: to see lush green plantations of Cannabis sativa growing across 1.3 million hectares of the country's farmland. That would be sufficient, Zhang calculates, to produce up to 10 million tonnes of hemp plants a year and, with it, around two million tonnes of hemp fibre.

Expanded production of hemp, he says, offers enormous benefits for China. First, it would provide a major new source of fibre for the textile industry, reduce dependency on cotton and, in the process, free large areas of cotton-growing land for food production. In addition, hemp cultivation would generate extra income for millions of small-scale farmers in some of the country's poorest rural areas.
China currently cultivates industrial hemp over an area of around 20 000 ha. That is just a fraction of the 5.6 million ha dedicated to cotton (China is the world's biggest cotton grower, with a harvest of some 6.6 million tonnes in 2006). Among natural fibres processed for use in Chinese textiles, hemp output ranks far behind that of wool and silk and of other bast sources such as flax, jute, kenaf and ramie.

Zhang points out that China is the birthplace of industrial hemp: archaeological evidence shows that the plant was grown for fibre some 4 000 years ago, and it was not overtaken by cotton in clothing until early last century."

"UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – World leaders tried to inject momentum into climate change talks on Tuesday but new proposals by China and a rallying cry from U.S. President Barack Obama did little to break a United Nations deadlock."

The dismal response of the United States to the issue of climate change can be transformed in an instant.

The simple solution is to end hemp prohibition now. Hemp is a biomass champion at scrubbing the air of excess CO2 as it grows, from the day the seed is planted in soil. Hemp burns clean as biofuel and aerates soil up to six feet deep.  This vital tool for solving the climate crisis can make a radical difference in the quality of life on this planet.

"OFFICIALS in southwest China's Yunnan Province are promoting the cultivation of hemp for industrial use to increase the income of local residents.

A hemp fiber processing factory with an annual capacity of 2,000 tonnes began production yesterday in Menghai County in Dai Autonomous Prefecture of Xishuangbanna, a mountainous region in Yunnan.

"The fiber from hemp is widely used to make socks and bulletproof clothes as well as top-grade suits," said Shi Dongming, board chairman of China Hemp Industrial Holding Investment Co Ltd, which runs the production line.

Local officials expect the plant to help raise the living standard of farmers."

The United States should do the same and not only end hemp prohibition, but encourage hemp commerce. The more hemp we grow, the more excess CO2 we remove from the atmosphere.

2,700-year-old marijuana stash found

"OTTAWA – Researchers say they have located the world's oldest stash of marijuana, in a tomb in a remote part of China.The cache of cannabis is about 2,700 years old and was clearly "cultivated for psychoactive purposes," rather than as fibre for clothing or as food, says a research paper in the Journal of Experimental Botany.

The 789 grams of dried cannabis was buried alongside a light-haired, blue-eyed Caucasian man, likely a shaman of the Gushi culture, near Turpan in northwestern China.

The extremely dry conditions and alkaline soil acted as preservatives, allowing a team of scientists to carefully analyze the stash, which still looked green though it had lost its distinctive odour.

"To our knowledge, these investigations provide the oldest documentation of cannabis as a pharmacologically active agent," says the newly published paper, whose lead author was American neurologist Dr. Ethan B. Russo.Remnants of cannabis have been found in ancient Egypt and other sites, and the substance has been referred to by authors such as the Greek historian Herodotus. But the tomb stash is the oldest so far that could be thoroughly tested for its properties.

We now have a pro hemp president and secretary of commerce elect, poised to make great, positive changes. Shifting back to a hemp based economy can have a powerfully healing effect, but we have to use our balls and demand the unconditional removal of all restrictions regarding the hemp plant and let it assume it's rightful place in the marketplace.

1. Include tax revenue from the #1 cash crop in the nation. The governor of California is crying about not having enough money while he continues to veto hemp bills that could provide a subatantial revenue to city, state and federal governments.

2. Shift to clean, easily renewable hemp bio fuel and biomass. A great book on the subject is HEMP FOR VICTORY: A GLOBAL WARMING SOLUTION by Richard M. Davis, founder and curator of the USA Hemp Museum.

3. Allow the use of hemp medicine in the process of good health, thereby reducing health care costs.

4. Encourage small business opportunities in hemp, including restoring the family farm structure for raw material growth. There is a strong place in the Information Age economy for the restoration of the family farm and other home based businesses.
